Most cities have a middle, and “central” means near it. Rome has four, and they are not close to each other. Termini, the Pantheon, St Peter’s and the Colosseum sit 2 to 4.5km apart — far enough that no single address puts all four within a comfortable walk.
So “central Rome” is not a useful phrase. The question is which of the four you want to step out into, and what you are willing to pay for the other three in transit time.

Read the columns against each other rather than down one. Termini is 0.17km from the station and 3.92km from St Peter’s. Vatican · Prati reverses both. There is no row that is close to everything, which is the honest shape of the city.
Termini — the only address the airport train reaches
Seven properties, all within 640m of the station, and that is the whole argument. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop from Fiumicino in 32 minutes and stops only here. From any other area the airport means a change or a taxi.
It is also where the deepest guest feedback sits — the seven range from 536 to 4,333 reviews, several times what the prettier districts have. That is not a coincidence: it is where most visitors actually sleep.
The cost is the evening. A station district is a station district, and the old city is a 20-minute walk or a bus. Hotels near Roma Termini sets the seven side by side.
Colosseo · Monti — ancient Rome at the door, the Vatican as an outing
Five properties running 0.22km to 1.27km from the Colosseum. Monti behind it is the one place in Rome where a neighbourhood with its own bars sits inside walking distance of a headline ruin.

Centro Storico — the walkable old city, and the metro problem
Five properties, 0.26–0.71km from the Pantheon. Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori and the Trevi Fountain are all inside that radius. If the plan is to wander, this is the row.
The catch is underground. Rome’s metro skirts this area rather than crossing it — the archaeology is in the way. Everything here is on foot, which is fine until it is 35 degrees or you are carrying luggage from Termini, 1.38–2.43km back. Centro Storico hotels works through it.
Spanish Steps · Veneto — the widest spread inside one area
Five properties, and this is the row where the ranges themselves are the finding: the Pantheon runs 0.56km to 2.38km depending on which one you book. That is a four-fold difference inside what looks like a single district on a map.

Vatican · Prati — first through the museum doors, last to everything else
Four properties, 0.36–1.48km from St Peter’s and 2.81–4.44km from Termini — the furthest column in the table. Worth it if the Vatican Museums are the reason for the trip and an early entry matters; expensive in time otherwise.
Prati behind the basilica is a working neighbourhood rather than a tourist strip, which some people prefer. Vatican and Prati hotels separates the two halves.
Trastevere — the evening everyone recommends, and only two hotels
Here is a finding worth stating plainly. We searched 414 Rome properties through the booking data and kept the ones inside 3km of the centre with a usable review sample. Trastevere came back with two hotels.
Not two good ones — two. The rest of the accommodation on that side of the river is apartments, guest houses and B&Bs with fewer than 30 reviews each. Trastevere is a neighbourhood people stay in without staying in a hotel, and if you want a front desk, a lift and a room you can compare on the same terms as the rest of this list, the choice is genuinely two.

Before you book
- The city tax is charged at check-out and rises with the star rating — €10 per person per night at five stars, €3 at a campsite, capped at ten nights. It is not in the price you booked (the detail is on the Italy page)
- Check the metro only after you have checked the walk. In Rome the two are not the same question
- Rooms for three or more are scarce, more so than in Asia. Confirm the configuration rather than the label
- Distances here are straight-line from property coordinates, not walking routes. Rome’s streets do not run straight
