Vatican and Prati Hotels — First Through the Museum Doors, Last to Everything Else
Four hotels sit 363m to 1.48km from St Peter's. This side of the river is the furthest from Termini of any Rome district here, but unlike the historic centre it has a metro — line A stops at Ottaviano and Lepanto.

The four properties on this side of the Tiber all sell the same headline — St Peter’s on foot — and the district holds the two extremes of this whole comparison. It has the closest address to the basilica at 363m and the furthest address from Termini at 4.44km.
One thing separates it from the historic centre, and it is not distance. The archaeology keeps Rome’s metro out of the old city. It does not keep it out of Prati: line A stops at Ottaviano by the Vatican Museums and again at Lepanto, the station for Piazza Cola di Rienzo. That is the structural advantage of this side of the river.
Four addresses, and how far each one leans
| Hotel | St Peter’s | Pantheon | Termini | Fiumicino |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starhotels Michelangelo Rome | 363m | 1.85km | 3.87km | 20.97km |
| Hotel Della Conciliazione | 618m | 1.44km | 3.36km | 21.69km |
| Camplus San Pietro | 618m | 2.42km | 4.44km | 20.48km |
| Twenty One Hotel | 1.48km | 1.31km | 2.81km | 22.57km |
The column that decides it is Termini. The Leonardo Express runs only from there, so from this side of the city the airport is a transfer or a taxi. The consolation sits in the last column: at 20.5–21km these are the shortest taxi rides to Fiumicino in the comparison, because the airport is on this side of Rome.
The Borgo, the basilica and Prati are three different stays
Starhotels Michelangelo Rome is the one to book if an early museum entry is the whole point — 363m, and 255m closer than anything else here. It also carries connecting rooms and family rooms across 179 rooms, which in Rome is rare enough to be a reason on its own.
Hotel Della Conciliazione sits on Borgo Pio, the pedestrian lane inside the medieval quarter between the Vatican walls and Castel Sant’Angelo. It is closest of the four on four of five rows — the Pantheon at 1.44km makes an evening in the old city a walk over the river rather than a decision.
Twenty One Hotel is not organised around the basilica at all. Via Cola di Rienzo is Prati’s shopping spine, with food halls and department stores instead of souvenir stalls. Furthest here from St Peter’s, closest to everything else.
There is a reason the two feel like different cities. Prati was laid out after 1870 to house the officials of the new Italian kingdom, on a Turin-style grid of wide straight streets deliberately unlike the old city — and the alignment was reportedly chosen so that the dome of St Peter’s is not visible along them. The main street was dedicated in 1911 to Cola di Rienzo, who had tried to replace papal power with a Roman republic. You are staying beside the Vatican in a quarter built to turn its back on it, which is not something a booking page will mention.
Camplus San Pietro is the outlier on scale: 396 rooms, more than twice the next largest in this comparison. When Rome fills up the Vatican side fills first, and this is the property that still has availability — at three-star pricing. The table shows what that costs: three “furthest” entries in one column.
Two things to plan around
Check-out at Camplus San Pietro is 10:30, joint earliest of the 28 Rome stays here. Ask about luggage storage if your flight is in the afternoon.
The Vatican Museums entrance is not the same place as the basilica. They sit on opposite sides of the walls. Both are close from every address here, but check which one your timed ticket names before you plan the morning.
If the Vatican is one morning rather than the trip
Then this district is working against you the rest of the week. Centro Storico keeps the Pantheon inside 710m, and Hotel Damaso there is 1.66km from St Peter’s — a walk across the river that gets you both.
All six areas are compared in where to stay in Rome. City tax is collected at check-out and scales with the star rating, outside the rate you booked (the bands are on the Italy page).
